The 5th Asia – Europe Parliamentary Partnership Meeting: ASEP
H.E. Prasobsook Boondech, President of the Senate led the Thai Delegation to attend the The 5th Asia – Europe Parliamentary Partnership Meeting (ASEP) which was held between 18 and 20 June in Beijing, the People’s Republic of China.
The Thai delegation participated in sessions during the meeting. Hon. Col. Apiwan Wiriyachai, Second Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and Hon. Phiraphan Phalusuk, Member of the House of Representatives took part in a Preparatory Meeting and a Meeting of the Drafting Committee. In the First Panel Discussion on Trade and Economic at which Hon. Teerajitt Sthirotamawong joined as a co-chairman, Hon. Alongkorn Ponlaboot delivered a speech to encourage all participants to rapidly complete the Doha Development Agenda of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
In the Second Panel Discussion on Social and Cultural matters, Hon. Trungjai Buranasomphob addressed the panel, calling ASEP stakeholders to establish cooperation among cultural diversity and stimulate the importance of achieving the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
Alongside the meeting, the Thai delegation also paid a courtesy call on H.E. Wu Bangguo, Leader of National People’s Congress (NPC) and Hon. Jia Qinglin, Chairman of the People’s Political Consultative Conference. Both sides considered their relationship which has gradually improved in every aspect.
The 5th Meeting of the AIPA Fact-Finding Committee (AIFOCOM) to Combat the Drug Menace (22-25 June 2008, Singapore)
The Thai Delegation led by Hon. Titima Chaisang, Member of the House of Representatives and Leader of the Thai delegation participated in the 5th Meeting of the AIPA Fact-Finding Committee (AIFOCOM) to Combat the Drug Menace during 22-25 June 2008 in Singapore.
The 5th AIFOCOM concentrated on the precursor proliferation, legal approach, partnerships among parliamentarians, public and private sectors, and all community groups to handle the drug situation in the region collectively. Moreover, the participants agreed on implementing alternative development program and strengthening cross-sectoral linkages as well as improving coordination among existing regional and extra-regional mechanisms.
Hon. Titima Chaisang delivered a country report stating that Thailand’s drug control is based on the idea of disconnecting drug demand from drug supply. She also cited that Thailand is seeking cooperation both in bilateral and multilateral approach, serving as the platform to address domestic, regional and international drug problems based on the United Nations Convention on Drug Controls. Moreover, Thailand manifests a strong commitment of the Thai people to cope with all kinds of drug situations and is ready to make a contribution to the reduction of regional and global narcotic cultivation by sharing its expertise in sustainable alternative development with other countries.
