Message from the Chair of Women Parliamentarians of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (WAIPA) H.E. Daw Su Su Lwin on the
International Women’s Day 2017:
“Hard work, patience, creativity and resilience are the attributes of ASEAN women. These traits are engrained in them because many work alongside with their men to fend for their families.
Now due to greater industrialisation, more women in rural areas are migrating to urban areas and neighbouring countries to gain better job opportunities. However, many face discrimination, exploitation and coercion due to poor education, and lack of knowledge to gain legal protection.
Therefore, let us ensure that women get equal access to education, skills development and salary, and that they are not coerced into working in an environment that harms their wellbeing and dignity.
Finally, let us treat women with respect for their multifaceted roles and their enormous political, social and economic contributions, and work for their greater representation in parliaments and other organisations, so that their views and needs can be heard and their lives may change.”
