#Philippine “House speaker Alvarez softens tone on Philippine National Police Chief”

11 October 2017

Three days after calling for the resignation of Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez on Monday made an about-face, saying the police chief deserves a second change, The Manila Times Online reported on Tuesday.

Alvarez’s change of heart came a day after he attended dela Rosa’s birthday party in Camp Crame on Monday.

His birthday wishes for dela Rosa were: good health and to rid the PNP of scalawags.

But anti-crime advocates on Monday urged Interior Secretary Ismael Sueno to discipline dela Rosa for his apparent failure to cleanse the PNP of scalawags.

In a speech during dela Rosa’s birthday celebration on Sunday, President Duterte said the PNP chief was not accountable for the abduction and killing of South Korean businessman Jee Ick Joo allegedly by at least eight men including three active policemen.

Presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella assured that there will be no whitewash or coverup of the case. “We will not tolerate corrupt, abusive, errant policemen who detray the organization and the man and women in uniform who continue their faithful, dedicated and loyal services to the country,” he said.

He also downplayed criticisms that Duterte’s support of dela Rosa is tantamount to tolerating the misdeeds of some rouge policemen.
