President Bounnhang talks to Khammuan provincial authorities.
President BounnhangVorachit has told Khammuan provincial authorities to attach great importance to fighting corruption and poverty along with exerting effort to drive development.
The president gave the guidance during his tour to the central province on Tuesday, where he was welcomed by provincial governor, OdaySoudaphone, other officials and local residents.
The provincial authorities were told to pay greater attention to encourage and assist local people to grow more commercial crops and raise animals for sale in order to improve their livelihood and fight poverty.
In addition, President Bounnhang suggested the authorities find markets so that locally-grown farm products enjoy market access.
Already bound by private investment, the president stressed the need to ensure that the investments comply with principles of sustainability.
In this regard, the leader entrusted the authorities to strictly inspect and follow up investment projects and businesses to ensure they observe the country’s laws and regulations, especially the environmental guidance so that the natural environment is well protected.
The president praised the provincial authorities for the achievements the province has made over the past year, which have enabled it to enjoy high-level economic growth of almost 8 percent ? higher than the national average level of just 6.9 percent.
The agriculture and forestry sector contributed 25 percent to the provincial gross domestic product (GDP) amounting to more than 1,345 billion kip, the provincial governor, MrOday told the president.
The industry sector contributed to 41 percent of GDP, amounting to more than 2,206 billion kip, while the service sector occupied the rest.
The achievements have raised the income per capita of the province’s residents to more than 15.7 million kip (US$1,922).
As the province boasts agricultural production potential, the authorities plan to promote agricultural production for sale, especially rice production as a driving force to fight poverty among its people.
MrOday informed the president that his province is striving to increase the annual rice yield from 349,056 tonnes harvested in the 2015-2016 fiscal year to 463,340 tonnes by 2020.
