#Indonesia : Indonesian Humanitarian Aid a Form of Constructive Support for Inclusive Development in Rakhine State

“Indonesia has elected to take constructive steps to aid Myanmar in creating peace, stability, and development in Rakhine State,” said RI Foreign Minister, Retno Marsudi at the official event for the  handover of Indonesian humanitarian aid to the people of Rakhine State on Saturday, 21 January 2017.

In her remarks, the RI Minister asserted that bilaterally and through ASEAN, Indonesia has a high commitment for assisting in inclusive development in Myanmar. The RI Minister also conveyed that Indonesia has been following various developments in Rakhine State since the attack on a police post on 9 October 2016. In this regard, Indonesia has chosen to take constructive steps. “In two months I have visited Myanmar three times, not only to meet State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, but also to speak to various stakeholders to ascertain the best ways to help Rakhine State,” said the Minister.

The RI Minister also conveyed her hope that the aid can reach all the communities in Rakhine State, particularly the Muslim community. The Minister also took the opportunity to convey Indonesia’s commitment to continue assisting Myanmar in the medium and long term, particularly in the fields of education, health, agriculture, entrepreneurship, as well as democracy and governance. “Indonesia hopes that this aid can help create conducive conditions for peace and stability which is greatly needed for inclusive development in Myanmar, especially Rakhine State,” explained the Minister.

President Joko Widodo personally saw off the delivery of the aid from Tanjung Priok Port om 29 December 2017. The aid consisted of 10 containers filled with instant noodles, wheat flour, baby food, and sarongs.

The aid was received by the Minister for Social Welfare, Dr. Win Myat Aye and witnessed by Rakhine’s Chief Minister U Nyi Pu. The Indonesian aid was distributed directly to the needy, especially in refugee sites. “The Government and people of Myanmar are very grateful and appreciate Indonesia’s aid and consistency in supporting Myanmar,” said Minister Win Myat Aye.

The handover event was also attended by foreogn representatives in Sittwe, including the Consuls of India and Bangladesh as well as UN Representative in Rakhine State.
