September 3-7, 2018 marked the 39th AIPA General Assembly in Singapore. With more than 350 delegation which consists of AIPA Member Parliaments, Observers, and Guests of the Host, the meeting was successfully convened with great results. 

The unity of ASEAN has maintained its weight, strength, and relevance to the region. By encouraging all commitment of AIPA Member Parliaments, AIPA’s role in supporting ASEAN centrality will remained vibrant. The work of the 39th AIPA General Assembly focuses on building a Resilient and Innovative ASEAN Community, which also a theme of ASEAN Chairmanship this year. Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore, Teo Chee Hean stated that there are 4 C’s that AIPA can focuses on, in helping to build a more Cohesive, Connected, Creative, and Climate-Resilient ASEAN.

Cohesive, as platform for our parliamentarians to identify and discuss matters of common concern, AIPA plays an important role in fostering greater cohesion and regional cooperation in spite of situations and crises that we may face from time to time. Connected, as representatives of our people, AIPA parliamentarians have a key role to play in helping our citizens to better understand the importance of a more inter-connected ASEAN and the need to pursue free and open markets. Creative, AIPA parliamentarians are well-placed to encourage a mind-set of creativity and innovation among our peoples. We also can learn new skills and take advantage of new opportunities. The digital revolution, form of the ASEAN Smart Cities Network, AIPA parliamentarians will play a key role in promoting the adoption of new technologies among ASEAN’s businesses and peoples through the rules and laws which created in Parliament. Last but note least, Climate-Resilient ASEAN. AIPA parliamentarians play a critical role in our collective push for a low-carbon and climate-resilient ASEAN, through encouraging the promotion of sustainable growth and ecosystem.

Peace and prosperity will always required a strong commitment and human will for its existence. Spreading the story of ASEAN through a collective efforts must be continued for the benefits of our ASEAN people.
