Consultative Workshop on the State Gender-Related Legislation and Participation of Women in the Parliamentary Processes of AIPA Member Parliaments
12 February 2018
Auspicious under the AIPA Capacity Development commissioned by the Federal Foreign Office of Germany in cooperation with the AIPA Secretariat, a consultative workshop on ‘Consultative Workshop on the State Gender-Related Legislation and Participation of Women in the Parliamentary Processes of AIPA Member Parliaments’ was convened in Jakarta from 6 to 9 February 2018. The Workshop aimed at the issue of gender equality and the participation of women in politics, particularly in the affairs of parliaments in the ASEAN Member States.
AIPA established Women Parliamentarians of AIPA (WAIPA) in 1998 to increase and strengthen women participation in politics. Despite the existence of WAIPA and the fact that some women in AMS have gained more prominence and empowerment to make decisions, gender inequality remains a serious problem in the ASEAN region.
The consultative workshop was attended by women parliamentarians and parliamentary staff of AIPA Member Parliaments. Discussion and information exchanges of the current situation with regards to gender issues covered a broad picture of similarities, differences, and social-culture challenges encountered by nearly all women in the ASEAN region.
Although gender-related legislations have been enacted by almost all AIPA Member Parliaments, the conference participants agreed that reviews and amendments need to be taken in order to place the affirmative policy to guarantee full non-discriminatory practices.
The consultative workshop aimed to encourage a more progressive and pro-gender policy formulation in all AIPA Member Parliaments. Therefore, the workshop was important to enhance the role of WAIPA as a productive and supportive committee to the AIPA goals.
