Four Decades of AIPA and the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Thailand

Prof. Pornpetch Wichitcholchai, President of the National Legislative Assembly of the Kingdom of Thailand has pleased to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of ASEAN Inter – Parliamentary Assembly this year. The Secretariat of the House of Representatives cooperated with Thailand Post therefore produced the set of 40th Anniversary of ASEAN Inter – Parliamentary Assembly stamp using the previous logos of AIPO and the present logo of AIPA.

The Development of the Logos: from AIPO to AIPA

In 1997, Member Countries concurred on the use of the first AIPO logo. The logo was designed in the shape of a pentagon surrounded on the inside by the flags of the original five Member Countries of AIPO. The acronym ‘AIPO’ stated for “ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Organization” is placed at the center.

At the 16th AIPO General Assembly in Singapore, the proposal of the new logo was discussed. The designer’s selection was intended to depict Parliament as the summit of a nation and the epitome of democracy. A series of continuous white strokes on the form represented the mission of the organization, to facilitate concerted efforts. The colors found in the logo represented all the member countries’ national flags. Under the triangle, the acronym AIPO is in bold to capture the spirit of the next century.

In 2007, the organization moved to another step since all the members signed on AIPA Statue to strengthen the organization itself and integrate the close cooperation among member countries. AIPO therefore changed its name from AIPO to AIPA, stated for ASEAN Inter – Parliamentary Assembly. However, it is coincidental with the same logo design. Only a slight change is the acronym AIPO to AIPA in bold and this logo has been using since then until now.

The logos have represented the history of AIPA and the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Thailand. As a member country, Thailand therefore created this set of special commemorative stamp to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of AIPA, as a symbol of long and stable period of co-operation.
